Dialysis Service Optimisation – Hôpital Général de Douala (HGD)

The project was scoped as a full extension and modernisation of the centre, designed for capacity and durability. It brought together four essential elements:

• Rehabilitation and construction of an extended building to house 10 new treatment posts.
• A robust new water treatment system, the backbone of safe, reliable dialysis.
• Upscale education and training of end-users, so the centre’s own teams could run the expanded service with confidence.
• A sustainable equipment maintenance service, to keep every dialysis station available over the long term.

Through rigorous contract procedures, a consortium was retained for this sensitive project: Gima-Bambot MedTech Ltd. and SoilSource Ltd. Gima-Bambot MedTech Ltd. was responsible for the supply and installation of the dialysis equipment, the provision of training and education, and the provision of maintenance services. SoilSource Ltd. handled the rehabilitation and construction of the extended building.

This integrated approach, equipment, infrastructure, training and maintenance, is what turns a one-off purchase into a sustainable dialysis operation.

Delivered as a structured project deployment, the work moved from concept to fully operational care in a tightly coordinated sequence:

1. Tender and consortium. Following rigorous contract procedures, Gima-Bambot MedTech Ltd and SoilSource Ltd. were selected to deliver the project together.
2. Construction of the extension. SoilSource Ltd. rehabilitated the existing space and built the new wing designed to host the 10 additional treatment posts.
3. Water treatment and equipment installation. Gima-Bambot MedTech Ltd. installed a robust new water treatment system and supplied and commissioned the dialysis equipment.
4. Training of end-users. Clinical and technical staff were trained to operate and care for the new equipment.
5. Sustainable maintenance. A maintenance service was put in place for regular preventive servicing and repairs, keeping the centre dependably available.

Timeline: the project was completed in just four months.

 

In four months, HGD achieved its goal, with measurable improvements across the centre:

• Treatment capacity upgraded to 32 dialysis posts, including the new building’s 10 additional posts.
• Boosted treatment performance, allowing more patients to be treated reliably.
• Local availability of consumables, reducing supply interruptions.
• Regular preventive maintenance and repairs, keeping equipment dependable.
• Regular, uninterrupted treatment of patients, the outcome that matters most.

For patients living with chronic kidney failure across Douala, the Littoral Region and beyond, the extended centre means dependable, life-sustaining dialysis closer to home, with fewer interruptions and a service sized for real demand. For the hospital, it means a renewed, higher-capacity centre that reinforces HGD’s role as a regional reference for renal care.

Because training and a sustainable maintenance service were built in from the start, the impact endures: the centre is not only bigger, it is more resilient. Local consumable availability and regular servicing protect the daily reliability that dialysis patients depend on.

By strengthening one of the largest hemodialysis centres in the CEMAC sub-region, this project demonstrates how the right renal care infrastructure, delivered as a coordinated partnership, can transform care for thousands of patients, and offers a model that can be scaled to other hospitals across Central Africa.
