The Challenge
The hemodialysis centre at Hôpital Général de Douala (HGD) is one of the most established and the largest in Cameroon and the CEMAC sub-region. For patients living with chronic kidney failure, it is a lifeline: dialysis is not optional and it cannot wait, as missed sessions put lives at risk.
But success brought strain. As patient numbers grew, the centre’s ageing and unreliable equipment struggled to keep up, and the demand for trained personnel rose with it. The infrastructure that had served the region for years could no longer match the need. In 2021, HGD set out to completely overhaul the centre’s look, feel and performance, not with a quick fix, but with a lasting upgrade to its renal care infrastructure.

The Solution
The project was scoped as a full extension and modernisation of the centre, designed for capacity and durability. It brought together four essential elements:
- Rehabilitation and construction of an extended building to house 10 new treatment posts.
- A robust new water treatment system, the backbone of safe, reliable dialysis.
- Upscale education and training of end-users, so the centre’s own teams could run the expanded service with confidence.
- A sustainable equipment maintenance service, to keep every dialysis station available over the long term.
Through rigorous contract procedures, a consortium was retained for this sensitive project: Gima-Bambot MedTech Ltd. and SoilSource Ltd. Gima-Bambot MedTech Ltd. was responsible for the supply and installation of the dialysis equipment, the provision of training and education, and the provision of maintenance services. SoilSource Ltd. handled the rehabilitation and construction of the extended building.
This integrated approach, equipment, infrastructure, training and maintenance, is what turns a one-off purchase into a sustainable dialysis operation.
The Implementation
Delivered as a structured project deployment, the work moved from concept to fully operational care in a tightly coordinated sequence:
- Tender and consortium. Following rigorous contract procedures, Gima-Bambot MedTech Ltd and SoilSource Ltd. were selected to deliver the project together.
- Construction of the extension. SoilSource Ltd. rehabilitated the existing space and built the new wing designed to host the 10 additional treatment posts.
- Water treatment and equipment installation. Gima-Bambot MedTech Ltd. installed a robust new water treatment system and supplied and commissioned the dialysis equipment.
- Training of end-users. Clinical and technical staff were trained to operate and care for the new equipment.
- Sustainable maintenance. A maintenance service was put in place for regular preventive servicing and repairs, keeping the centre dependably available.
